Dinah felt a rush of panic through her veins and she gave a gasp as a figurine slipped from her nerveless fingers and broke into pieces at her feet. She thought of ducking beneath the counter in an attempt to conceal herself, but Jason Devrel had the eyes of a hawk and there was no evading him. The china and glassware department at Grady’s was at the rear of the store, and Dinah was arranging figurines on a display counter, her spectacles halfway down her nose as usual, when she saw a tall and familiar figure striding along one of the aisles in her direction. And he had made it clear that if ever Dinah wanted to be free of him, it would only be on condition that she surrender that child to him. And now, she was actually married to Jason!īut not the sake of their unborn child that Jason had taken such a step. But it was not until that never-to-be-forgotten Hallowe'en night that everything changed-for Dinah, at any rate. From childhood, Dinah had been under the spell-and under the thumb-of her stern guardian Jason Devrel.
